Internal vs. External

In my career, I’ve experienced all sorts of teams. From highly functional, successful and rewarding to static, uninspired and toxic. As a leader, it’s not always clear how to shift out of an unhelpful dynamic. When you are the leader in the middle of the challenges, communication issues, pressure and unexpressed frustration, it’s nearly impossible to have the objectivity and skill to help the team navigate to a better reality. This is why having an external partner is incredibly constructive.

An external coach/consultant provides:

  • Psychological Safety & Confidentiality. External coaching provides a higher level of safety so people can address issues authentically and transparently without concern of being judged by someone internal.

  • Objectivity. External coaches are unburdened by prior mental models of individuals, relational dynamics and past issues.

  • Focus. A coach coming into an organization is free from shared competing priories. Scaling is for processes, not people.

  • Momentum. Commitment to an external program creates momentum leveraging intrinsic motivation.

  • High Touch. Provide you and your team the same level of care and support you want to provide to your clients.
